Micro-blogging is a new form of blogging which allows people to write small text updates (mostly up to 150 Character and publish them easily, either to be viewed by anyone or by a restricted group by adding some tags or like that can be chosen by the person. These messages can be submitted by a variety of means, including text messaging, instant messaging, email, MP3 or the web.
It has been a technique adapted by many bloggers and advertisers to promote their stuff.Users also use it because it is simple and easy to share links, notifying people about any updates in your blog or any such thing.
Here is a Chart from Compete.com showing the Top 5 Micro-Blogging Site's , Monthly Unique Visitors in past 1 year...
As you can see through the chart in the top 5 micro-blogging sites the twitter is at the top..Now I will give some details about those 5 sites here..
1.Twitter
Twitter, which was launched in July 2006, won the Web Award in the blog category at the 2007 South by Southwest Conference in Austin, Texas. This free service gives you the options to post status updates via Text Messaging (SMS), e-mail, or web browser. The main success for twitter has been that it provide 3rd party developers to make application for it.As a result of this many sites are there to enhance your twitting experience like Twittad.com which helps monetizing your twitter profile...

2.Tumblr
Tumblr is a tumblelog site and is one of the nearest compitetor to twitter. A tumblelog is a variation of a blog that favors short-form, mixed-media posts over the longer editorial posts frequently associated with blogging. Common post formats found on tumblelogs include links, photos, quotes, dialogues, and video. Unlike blogs, tumblelogs are frequently used to share the author’s creations, discoveries, or experiences while providing little or no commentary.
3.Plurk
Plurk looks to be a clone of twitter.Plurk is themed IM (Instant Messaging) for groups of people spread out on a time line. And if you like Twitter and Pownce, chances are, you’re going to like Plurk, too…The reason it is just so tempting to jump in head to feet with Plurk is because it doesn’t just offer the neurotic updaters of Twitter a chance to do their thing, but the media sharers of Pownce and the stalkers of Facebook to revel in inter connectivity and really a taste of every other fairly popular social website out there at the moment. As a social network, Plurk has huge potential. But that potential is potentially locked up elsewhere, on other services like Twitter and Pownce.
4.Pownce
Pownce lets users post messages, links, files, or events. Messages posted to an account page are viewable by friends and “fans” of an individual. Once a message is posted, it can be replied to and forwarded, and there are a couple options for recipients (such as users that have not yet received the message).Pownce is also an advertising channel, charging a flat rate of $3 for an ad (a Pownce “note”) that is displayed 1000 times. More information on the Advertise page.
5.Jaiku
Jaiku’s interface looks a bit more polished and more “Web 2.0″ than Twitter’s, but in many ways the two are nearly identical. After a year and half of it's launch it was purchased by Google on October 9, 2007.Jaiku claims to be about letting your friends or coworkers know not only what you’re doing but also where you are via its mobile component—yet phone support is pretty limited. And though posts have a smaller size limit than Twitter, Jaiku more closely resembles a real blog site in that posts get their own pages, where comments can be added.
So that was something to know about the Top 5 Micro-Blogging sites where you can try joining and promote you blog. There are site like Digg, which have a micro-blogging features plus more than that it has some great outstanding features. But it is really a breath taking work promoting through all that.Isn't it?
